Making THE perfect birthday cake can be both an art and a science.

Here’s how to make the birthday cake decorating process easier:

Step 1:

Look online and in stores to get inspiration for your ideas. There are easy ways for high end cakes which can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to be made very easily.

Inspiration is where the process starts, however.

Stop at bakeries to see what they’re offering, and do a google image search to see other ideas that people have put together.

Theme cakes are also a great idea for birthday parties.

As themes change with popular culture, you’ll never be at a loss for ideas!

Understanding the person you’re making the cake for is important here – as knowing what they’re “in to” is the best way to tailor the cake around their likes and dislikes.

Step 2:

Purchase ingredients and all the extras you’ll need.

This step is critical to the process as it’s best to be properly prepared. As all the best Cake Decorating Books will tell you, the best results will come from the best ingredients.

Think ahead to what you’ll need for decorations and colors. It is easier to buy extra and use it again later if not used, than it is to have the possibility of lacking an item or decoration and have to make the choice between running out again or compromising on quality.

Step 3:

Using your favorite recipe, make the cake.

There are scores of recipes available, and at this point we won’t suggest one specifically.

The best thing to do is pay attention to who will be eating the cake: some people are allergic to egg or certain colors of icing dye, and this should be a major consideration when looking at cake recipes

Step 4:

Decorate to your liking

Once the cake is assembled, add decorations to the theme or idea you have.

Take your time and relax. It’s best to leave extra time so that if some extra last minute planning is needed, you won’t be rushed.

Making a cake can be fun and easy. Take your time with it, and focus on making the best cake you can!

There are a number of Cake Decorating Books available on the topic of birthday cake decorating. Look through your local bookstore or library and you’ll get some great ideas!

Looking to add extra energy to your cake with different cake decorating techniques?

We’ll show you some great tips!

- Properly Prepare Pans

Use a two inch paint brush to brush vegetable shortening onto the pan before using it.

When the pan is fully greased, dust flour over it.

This is an all-natural way to keep your cake from sticking.

- Allow The Cake To Set

It’s best to wait for the cake to set, preferably at least over 24 hours.

Store it in an airtight container for this time – it will keep the cake as fresh as possible

- Ice The Sides Properly

Icing the sides of the cake can be one of the trickiest parts.

The best way to do this is to spin the cake rather than move the spatula (think of how a potter’s wheel works).

Hold the spatula up against the cake, and spin it to have the icing even out.

This will create a smooth, easy finish around the cake sides – one of many great cake decorating techniques.

- Create Perfect Roses

Take a small bit of fondant, colored the way you want, and roll it into a ball with your hands.

When you have a perfect sphere, flatten it between two fingers, making a petal.

The thicker end attaches to the bottom of the rose, tapering off towards the top.

Wrap a few petals together – groups of three look fantastic!

- Study Up On Different Cake Decorating Techniques!

In the world of cake decorating, you always need to be practicing as much as possible.

Keep up to speed by reading the right blogs, and keeping a good library of Cake Decorating Books – you’ll thank yourself in the long run!
